2 macs, single iTunes and iPhoto libraries

I have an old G4 PowerBook and an Intel iMac. The iMac is my main machine that holds all my music and photos, but what I want to do is use the laptop to create iTunes playlists, add album artwork etc and delete/edit/oragnise photos in iPhoto.

I've tried moving the iTunes library to the shared folder and pointing the laptop iTunes to it, but when I create playlists on the laptop, they don't appear on the main machine.

I can't believe Apple don't have better out of the box support for this, surely, no one with two machines is going to want to duplicate all this stuff?!

Any ideas?

MP3Tunes, shared music streaming

There are two pieces here. One is the actual music files, which your shared folder takes care of. The second is the iTunes Library, which is the XML file that takes care of things like playlists and ratings. You can share this as well, but if that library is ever not available, iTunes will create a second, local one automatically.

You should check out http://MP3Tunes.com. I blogged about it a while back looking to solve a similar problem. You can keep a subset of music on your Laptop, and sync using their sync tool.

And, of course, it's not ideal, but you can "share" your music library, and just stream songs/playlists/etc. from the Intel iMac. You still can't create them locally on your laptop, however.
