With the 2010 Winter Olympics wrapping up this weekend in Vancouver, I hope we can put the past behind us. That is, the past of crappy U.S. online coverage of a major global sporting event, with the key offender being exclusive distributor NBC.
Liz Gannes wasn't impressed with the web coverage of the Olympics either.
I have to say I was wrong on one aspect: the Microsoft Silverlight-powered online streaming on the CTV Olympics site. From a technology perspective, it was well done (sorry @jbristowe).
Anti-Microsoft or anti-proprietary video grumblings aside, the technology as implemented was well done and was a pleasure to watch. We regularly had the live stream projected on the wall in Strutta's office.
I still think all of the news organizations (licenses or not) missed an opportunity in building something more relevant AND something that would actually make them money online (Liz's link to CBS revenue around March Madness college basketball is a good example).
