Maybe now is the time for a new model to emerge. Except it wouldn’t be new at all. The Building and Loan service that George Bailey ran in It’s a Wonderful Life wasn’t a bank, it was a coop, and its customers were shareholders. Could delicious become the first user-owned Internet service? Could we users collectively make Yahoo! an offer, buy in as shareholders, and run the service ourselves?

via blog.jonudell.net From Jon Udell, a thought that users might jointly fund / run web services, much like a coop. I had previously suggested that we might need to start exploring how to keep Flickr alive. Many of the people in my broader circle are fleeing to self hosting of their data. This is an important acknowledgement of the value, but is a step back from shared spaces. Federation is needed here, ideally with some "anchor" services. It would be lovely if Pinboard became an "anchor" for this sort of federation. Perhaps reach out to Diigo, or to Twitter (or bit.ly or or or), and really, actually explore federated bookmarking services.
