iPhone is a tablet

Our morning staff meeting got a little disrupted by the MacRumorsLive stream of Apple iPhone updates.

I've been predicting a Mac tablet for years. Here's the last time I predicted tablet specs. But, of course, Steve Jobs wouldn't call it a phone or a tablet....he wants a new category.

And yes, in my video interview with Roland yesterday, I said "no iPhone". I should have more clearly said "not a phone" -- because it really is a new category.

Both OS X and Safari Webkit are "platforms". What can we build on top?

The Google AND Yahoo partnership is amazing. Click to call. EDGE + Wifi.

Yeah, I'm excited...it's like a new age of computing + mobile has dawned.

Prediction on biggest complaints: availability, screen scratches/broken-ness, battery life

Well, according to engadget apparently nothing much: first party software only!

Excuting, challenging, disappointing. Typical Apple.

Incredibly exciting product I'll never own!

Lloyd: This is by far not the first touch screen we've seen. Many smartphones have had touch screens by now, and I'm confident that it won't be an issue.

Scratches - people will hop on this bandwagon like people hopping on the trash-PS3 bandwagon, it just earns them more page views and AdSense money, so of course people will yak about that. There was even a PS3-scratch complaint, and nobody looks at the PS3 case.

With a device as expensive as this, the first thing you do is get a very good cover device for it. Don't even think of spending $1000 on a phone without something to protect every inch of it.

Another issue - iPhone in Canada. I wonder if Fido believes they can make six-figure monthly income off the sucker thanks to the data rates. What do you think Boris?

Canadian cell players are going to have to make big changes to accommodate this thing. Still not too late for Skye Dayton to come in with his Helio service and offer this phone in Canada, either.

My point was it first

My point was it first generation for Apple, first gen in this product line. This will be the first smart phone I know of that is all screen.

Screen and (dirty) fingers is a really, really hard problem. I don't want a device that I have to wear gloves for.

One hand holding and navigation will be interesting, but it is important that it does it well, because I read somewhere that defines a smart phone ;-)

Where is the iPod?

Maybe the phone is the killer feature, but where is the stand alone tablet iPod for everyone else that does not want a smart phone? What does the next iPod look like?

First gen touch screen scary me.
