Just signed up for Spud

Small Potatoes Urban Delivery that is. Local Vancouver online grocery delivery (hmm...that doesn't sound right, but you get what I mean).

We're getting ~$15 worth of produce every week, and then a bunch of stuff every other week. First delivery is this Wednesday. Not quite sure how they're going to get into the building -- details are bit weak on that.

I always wanted to try this in Ottawa, but none of the options were any good. Maybe I'm overly picky because I did a project on this in university, where we analyzed the needs of people and rated different options. The Spud interface is still not great. Kate's comment was "I'm glad that they don't give you too many choices". I think this is a key phrase: pick some best-in-class products, don't overwhelm your customers.

But, the site is slow and the design is mediocre at best. Of course, these types of operations don't tend to have the cash to spend on a big site overhaul -- I'd love to have the kind of (financial) freedom to do this as a freebie. A blogging or community feature would be cool as well -- customers could post profiles and (most importantly) content like blog posts that are recipes or reviews of various products. You could design-a-meal or even design-a-diet, sharing it with others and having them comment. All the food/product references would automagically link to catalog items, and you could "click to add recipe" to have it in your next order, along with a print-out of the recipe.

I'm hoping for a lottery windfall -- then I'll have the resources to launch half a dozen of these web ideas I have percolating!

I love spud! I have been ordering for 5 weeks now and the produce is always great. The downside is that sometimes stuff is not available, but given permission they will substitute. Also, I think the website has been upgraded recently so it should be better.

We actually got a call last night from Spud, just to welcome us and verify a few things. We arranged to get another copy of our front door key made, so in the future if we are not home they will carry the delivery up and leave it outside our (inside) apartment door.

The delivery came by today just before 4pm. It comes in a RubberMaid container, with some icepacks around the perishables. Another advantage of this delivery service is that you don't have a million plastic bags to deal with. The vegetables were fresh and healthy looking, and they taste good too (I nibbled a carrot). Well, except for the avocado -- I thought at first it was a lime, it was so small. Strike avocados from the list for next week...

food delivery coops

There are food delivery programs aimed at low-income communities (but open to everybody) -- in Ottawa one is called the "Good Food Basket" and is run out of a community health centre. They buy food wholesale from local producers and then deliver it (I think -- or maybe you pick it at a close-by depot). I think it is successful at bringing good-quality low-cost food because it is run as a coop, ie. everybody has volunteer once in a while. That both lowers the cost and incentivizes people to select non-wilted food (since they're potentially selecting for themselves). But you don't get any choice about what you get, because it's kind of a public health program too so they choose your vegetables.

Does anybody have any experience with more traditional food coops that are run as a regular store? I don't know of any in Ottawa.

Lottery Windfall

May you win the lottery, so that you can pursue all those ideas to your heart's content!

I am curious to hear about your experience with "Spud". Our experience with Dairyland Organic Produce delivery a couple of years back was not so great. We often received wilted and sometimes downright rotten stuff at a high price.

The upside of such a program is that a variety of vegetables get delivered to you and once it's in front of you, you will prepare it and eat healthy meals.
(Note to Boris: This is not "oh mann" but "amann" - I can't switch users - what am I doing wrong?)
