I dropped by Tod Maffin's favourite alleyway on Tuesday morning, and he grabbed a few soundbites from me about the FreeTheNet.ca community wireless project.

The audio is online now, and the clip will air tomorrow (Thursday, October 11th, 2007). The CBC's Spark blog has a short mention, too.

Overall I'm pretty happy with how the piece turned out. I didn't quite expect the whole thing to be about FreeTheNet -- Tod had originally mumbled something about additional wireless stuff, but turns out it's all about free wireless. The stress on "free" was a little strong...the interesting part really is when we can find a great ISP partner who sees the logic in promoting wider coverage, more customers, and the opportunity for additional applications by such coverage.

Meraki question

Hey Boris, does a Meraki node communicate with other nodes to enable seamless crossover if a user moves from one node to another?

Yes

Yes, that's exactly what the "mesh" wireless system does. Depending on how fast you are going, it might not be completely seamless, and I certainly haven't done tests with things like a high bitrate streaming video, but in just walking around the office where we have 2 units, it all just looks like one big network.

Free the Net piece on CBC Radio

Yeah, truth is, I hadn't fuily figured out what the "real" story (i.e. what would interest most Canadians) was when we chatted.

I originally thought I could pitch a wider story to my producer, but, as I only get less than four minutes a week, I had to be judicial with the focus.

Thanks for coming out... I've had 12 emails and 3 phone calls so far from people wondering how to get involved... and the piece doesn't actually air until tomorrow AM
