Looks like I'll be on CTV Newsnet at 12:15pm today, talking about Rogers bringing the iPhone to Canada.
Of course, the funny thing here is that there are many many people in Canada who already have the iPhone, in its "unlocked" edition. John Biehler's iPhone category is my source for all the latest in unlocking and cool applications.
The rumour seems to think that part of the delay and secrecy is because of the possibility that we might get the "new" version of the iPhone, with 3G (which is a faster data network connection). The other rumours about the new model (or models? maybe a "business" version to compete with RIM's BlackBerry?) are things like a much upgraded camera, or even a front mounted camera for video calling.
I'm genuinely happy that we're getting the iPhone "for real" in Canada, but I'm worried about a) the price of the contract and b) the length of any contract from Rogers. We're in a monopoly situation here, since there aren't any other GSM providers in Canada. Expect Telus and Bell to start heavily pushing the HTC Touch and various consumer BlackBerry devices like the Pearl.
Update: here's a direct link to my video clip.

Atta boy, Boris!
Gotta love you roasting Rogers & the backwater on national TV. :)
good interview
Good interview Boris. I'm curious - did they tell you to tilt your head slightly to the left the whole time? ;)
iPhone II a world phone?
I heard a rumor that the new iPhone may be a multi-band worldphone like the top-of the-line BlackBerry. Any comment on that, Boris? Of course, that wouldn't necessarily mean it could be sold by CDMA based-telco, since the current multi-band worldphones don't allow you to switch on the fly between competing cariers in the same home marketplace, only outside the home marketplace.
I doubt it
A "worldphone" with CDMA support would be interesting. Except, of course, that North American pretty much has full GSM coverage now, so who would this be for?
One thing it *would* mean is competition, since Telus / Bell could then also offer the iPhone.
See? We're all playing the Steve Jobs rumour mill game again. This is going to be fun :P
that's what I was thinking
But if Apple stays true to form, Steve will have set an exclusive deal with Rogers. I have been with Rogers (aka Cantel in the nineties) since 1995 when I owned the first digital phone on the market in Canada well before there was a digital network to support it. A big Nokia brick. Talk about early adopter syndrome. Anyway, I give Rogers too much money. I would like choice. If Telus or Bell or anyone else offered an iPhone, I would likely jump.
ps. ask me about my EX-F1...dude.
Green hoody FTW
Good interview, Boris. Thanks for the linkage.
Hoody!
Somehow, I *always* get interview calls when I'm wearing a weird t-shirt, or decided not to shave, or something. Today, that would be dressed ready to play ultimate, and I ran out of time to buy a shirt on my way.
