My sister is visiting from Italy. She was trying to send an SMS back home, but apparently you have to know the SIM card number of the phone you are trying to reach, as well as the phone number -- this is on the Vodafone network.
So, I did some quick searching to see if there were some web-based services that allowed this. The two I found that (sort of) worked were Send SMS Now and ipipi. Send SMS now doesn't require an account, but it also doesn't seem to work -- we tested by trying to send to my phone here, and nothing ever arrived. Send SMS Now has an account-based system which requires an email address and sign-up. It also provides free email services and in general works quite while. However, the "free" part is exaggerated: we sent (and received) an SMS message to my phone, but you only get 2 credits for free. You then need to pre-pay your account to get more credits.
With all these difficulties and walled garden type approaches, I'm still convinced that pure IM/email will actually leapfrog SMS here in North America.
By the way, this will be my last post for a while: I'm off getting married and won't be back in action until August 9th.

I use clickatell.com to send mass sms's to lists i run for flashmobs and event promotion. About 5-8 cents per message, but they have a really good api and it just works.
It's a little bit of a bitch to get money setup with them though....so prepare in advance, then get a rep to auto-authorize your account.

What a wild thread! So for my $.02 worth (euro, if only I knew the key-combo), I throw the ring at pswin.com which at less than a dime a pop ain't free, but so far that's been the best real deal, and *much* cheaper than actually calling the damn mobiles, in Europe anyway. I figure I can say what I want to say for less than a dime via sms, and if the other party, who forces me onto their expensive network in the first place, wants to contact me, they can pay whatever they feel its worth. Pfffft!
That said, I've seen recent ads for even cheaper sms, but my ad retention is low. Still, I'm willing to pay for an actual web interface/ keyboard combo. I'm not willing to pay to call those damn pricey little phones. hrrmmmph.
oh, one nice thing about pswin.com, I can enter whatever i want (subject to non-abuse terms, natch), into the 'sender's address/number field. I can actually write my name, as opposed to my cell number, which I might prefer not to.
B.t.w why did you change the type. Have you chnaged configuration?

I had subscribed to this website and purchased certain sms credits to send sms to my friends in India. It turned into nightmare and very disappointment when I came to know that none of my reciepients had recieved sms on very important festival called Diwali.

TextJump.com works pretty well for sending SMS messages via a webbrowser.
Google Toolbar SMS service seems to work well for delivering messages to recipients within the US. Only one minor detail: you must know the provider of the recipient (or mass message all cellular networks- this is what I do sometimes).

have you tried just sending a text message to an email address instead? also goto vodaphone's website see if they have an option to send text from website to mobile number. (all carriers in usa have their own website with text messging features on it.

It's an old post and i think u already might have discovered www.mtel.bg . From here you can send free sms to MTel but I dont know about the others. Im looking for free sms to Globul as well but havent find any up to now. Hope this is helpful =))

i noticed that the sms send doesnt work to any uk phones, so it doesnt work very well at all. and even when they do send they never arrive, stay clear!
