Dave writes how he ranks on this top 50 list. This was a vote, so some of the items might seem "flaky" as Trevor points out in the comments on Dave's posting.
Here's what I've completed on the list:
- Swim with dolphins: actually, I rescued a Pacific White-Sided Dolphin while camping at Long Beach. Myself and some friends waded into the water, held it above the waves, and slowly walked it deeper until it could swim off to join the pod we could see at the mouth of the bay.
- Dive the GBR
- Fly on Concorde
- Whale watching: I don't think I've ever been on an "official" whale watching tour, but you occasionally see killer whales swimming next to the Bowen Island ferry, plus I saw right whales and a bunch of others on my Class Afloat trip
- Dive with sharks: they were hammerhead sharks, swimming around a sea mount (a spire of rock that rises out of deeper water) just off the Galapagos
- Skydive: just outside of Ottawa, when I was on my first co-op term with Nortel
- Hot air ballooning: Kate always wants to go when the festival is on in Gatineau, but we haven't made it yet
- Fly a jet
- Go on safari
- See Aurora Borealis: at first, I thought it was the light of "French towns" on the other side of the hills. This was while camping by Troy's house at Mann's Mountain in New Brunswick, north of Campbellton
- Walking the Inca Trail
- Climbing Sydney Harbour Bridge: another one checked off during the Class Afloat trip
- Visiting a paradise island: I think Moorea, Pitcairn, and Palmyra all count
- Driving a Formula 1 car
- Whitewater rafting: several times. Probably the best is in BC, near Lilloet
- Walking the Great Wall of China
- Doing a bungee jump
- Train journey across the Canadian Rockies: done this a couple of times. First time was also my first visit to Ottawa, back in 1995
- Driving down Route 66
- Helicopter tour over the Grand Canyon
- Travelling on the Orient Express: I think was on this route when I went from Bologna to Vienna, but I certainly didn't do the whole trip
- Bathing an elephant
- Visiting Antarctica
- Riding a Harley Davidson: I can't believe this made the list...
- Cowboy ranching: mmm...does a trip to the Flying U count?
- Climbing Mount Everest
- Experiencing a waterfall: there are people who have never seen a waterfall?!?
- Seeing the Earth from space
- Exploring the Galapagos Islands: yup. Got the blue-footed boobie pictures to prove it
- Trekking through a rainforest: I'm going to say that I think this should be re-labelled as something like the Amazon or South America -- BC is a rain forest!
- Galloping a horse along a beach: we rented horses on Easter Island, and walked along the beach. I don't think I can ride a horse well enough for it to gallop...
- Exploring the Pyramids
- Travelling on the Trans-Siberian Railway
- Watching the sun rise or set at Uluru
- Wingwalking: I wasn't sure either -- here's the oldest person ever to do it
- Climbing Mt Kilimanjaro
- A flight over a volcano
- Husky sledding
- Glacier hiking: several, including Blackcomb and Garibaldi
- Riding the world's rollercoasters: meaning several? I'm not a big fan of rollercoasters
- Blue Marlin fishing in the Florida Keys
- Paragliding
- Playing golf on Augusta National Golf Course: can we substitute "playing disc golf at the Pyramids"?
- Trek to see a gorilla
- Seeing tigers in the wild
- Hurtling down the Cresta Run
- Walt Disney World: the one in Tokyo probably doesn't count
- Las Vegas Casinos
- Watching orang-utans
- Watching polar bears
And here is TrevorJ's list:
- read every Shakespeare play (and see them performed at Stratford)
- run for office
- have a newspaper byline: does 'Yachting Magazine" in BC count? And, it was actually a photo credit...
- play in a band/orchestra
- own a business: yup
- attend the Nobel prize ceremony & speeches
- deliver a speech at your country's legislative assembly
- write a book
- raise a child
- dress up as Santa Claus & give presents to children
Hmmm...Trevor's list looks to be both harder to achieve and more worthwhile. The BBC list really only requires money, for the most part.

The Little Things
Ok, yes Trevor's list may be harder, but more worthwhile? Look at it a different way...How many people live their daily lives completely miserable? Little things, like whale watching and seeing the world are things that make life less doldrum, more worth experiencing. My list has everything from coloring 501 pictures (which seems ridiculous to most people, but is very relaxing to me and gives me one more thing I can do with my daughter) to getting my book published and owning my own business. It depends on your goal: to have more fun, to touch more lives, to leave a mark on society, or simply to improve the quality of your own life.
