If I get to vote, I pick pingback. Here's the Hixie whitepaper that says why. Time to work on the pingback module for Drupal.

Nice! And it seems pingback can handle spam a little better too. (or is that just because it is less popular). Trackbacs are crap nowadays. I get like >95% of spam and <5% of real trackbacks.
So unless pingback can solve this issue, i doubt any of the two will survive. (I know you can solve it by adding all sorts of heavy weight spamfilters inbetween, but that is "solving the pain, not the cause of the pain".)
