Syncing the Nokia E61 (and the rest of the E-Series) with Mac OS X

My friend Stewart Marshall took the plunge and also got an E61 after seeing mine. He ended up ordering from Expansys -- they look like a really great online store to order mobile gear from in Canada. I had noticed them before and will probably be getting a cheapo GPS unit from there to experiment with.

In any case, Stewart was asking about syncing with the Mac. There isn't an E-series compatible plugin for iSync yet, but there are various instructions for enabling this floating around.

I used the very geeky instructions from Mac OS X Hints. There is also a free plugin described here, although some people seem to have trouble with it.

Thanks for the E61 Tip

I'll check out Expansys.  The whole idea of locking myself into life with a mobile phone company is annoying enough.  But to have a phone that could run off WiFi - if they hadn't insisted on disabling it - drives me nuts.

Beware the Expansys

I ordered a Motorola SLVR L7 from them before they were released in North America.  Although the website said something like "North American plugs" it neglected to say that the plugs were British-style with adapters.  Not the end of the world but more things to carry if traveling.  Their phone customer service seemed good albeit rushed.  I wouldn't hesitate to call before ordering to confirm details like that.

And of course apple reported it as supported in iSync but the buried fine print said no bluetooth, after I'd bought it.  The next version did support it fully.

I'm crying a river here - morale of the story is how bleeding edge do you want to be.

All have adapters

My E61 has the same style of adapter. Actually...ALL the advanced phones I've purchased (none from Expansys so far) have come with these adapters. Given the choice between no advanced phones in Canada/US and ones with adapters....I'll take the adapter :P
