shhhhh

my ITX computer is so quiet that I am getting used to hearing the sound of me typing again.... surreal.

I love it. The 533MHz Eden chip is no speed demon; but is ideal for *lightweight* web server / firewall / mail serving duties.

I would put the speed as equivalent to a 300MHz PII overall.

Can always go PowerPC

Yeah, it really looks like a DOA product. On the other hand, there's always the PowerPC alternative, Terrasoft Solutions. These guys are pretty much holding the fort for PowerPC on general non-embedded computers while Apple sits in its sublimely dazed state, repeating "Jobs is good, Jobs is great"

cost

You can get a decent laptop for that kind'o US money.
They mention digital video use, but 30GB is hardly adequate for that, and they don't state the (all-important) drive speed specs.
There are lots of cases avail in "VCR" or "stereo" style form factor, but they don't seem popular.

Grrr.... why a cube?

Nearly every other piece of consumer electronics comes in a 14" x 3-5" format!

This isn't a home server

It's a small form factor PC. It's more in the "concept PC" category than being actually useful for anything. As Greg points out, the cost of it means that you can get a (better) laptop for the same money.

But it is really small. VIA is now doing some interesting things with their C3 processor. Evan has a C3-based Linux box that's fanless -- it runs his site, among other things.

Hmmm...don't know if we have full specs/details on his setup yet. Have to bug him to put something together.
