Does anyone know where I can get components to make a USB cable?
I bought a new digital camera. So far so good. Early this morning, before completely waking up, I was getting everything in the mail for the manufacturer's rebate. This meant cutting the UPC off the camera box.
Snip, snip. Closer look. Egad!
I cut the USB cable. Slit it just enough to sever a few strands. I haven't tried it to see if it works, but I am not hopeful. No other way to connect it to the Mac.
My wife hates me and I'm forced to go shopping before Christmas.

Everyone makes Ethernet
Good to see you are no longer an Anonymouse, Graham :)
Most retail shops don't make Ethernet cable, likely because of two things. First, their cost for cables is likely very low, and secondly, if you can make Ethernet cable, you're likely not working in retail. We make Ethernet patch cords all the time, but we just pass on time+materials to our customers. A roll of Ethernet is ~$0.50/ft.
The difficulty with all these digital devices and their USB cables is that the end that plugs into the device is completely non-standard. Or perhaps, different standards is a better word. My Nikon digital camera, Sony Clie and Epson scanner all use USB, but the end that plugs into the device is (you guessed it) different on all three...
okay
Yeah, after whining a little, checking various stores at Carlingwood and calling the Focus Center, I got out the electrical tape and it worked.
Ouch!
Umm. For starters, it's all electrical signals, so doing a duct-tape patch-up *might* work.
If the USB connection on the camera end isn't completely proprietary (which it some times is) you should be able to get one at Future Shop. The other place to try is actual camera places, like The Focus Centre or Ginn Photography on Bank Street (the former at Cooper, the latter at Gladstone). You'll need to take the actual camera with you to make sure it fits.
Should learn you *never* to trust mail-in rebates. To me, I'd rather pay a little more and NOT have to deal with a mail-in rebate.
