Start with smart edges and a dumb center and you’re better off. And if you start the other wrong way round, you’ll never make the transition because the embedded base of dumb edge devices imposes an impossible switching cost

IMHO, his example tends to trivialize the effort of updating the config on the cellphones that people have. I'm not saying that a smart edge has a play, it does, I just think that more smarts on the edge = more problems at the edge that people have = more operations costs.
