Here's the latest update (as of 6/17/2008):

Currently, Drupy can successfully run Drupal Bootstrap Phase 8. This means there is one more Drupal Bootstrap phase to be completed before alpha completion. For more details, check the Drupy diagnostic page, which is updated regularily.

Find the code on Gitorius, news and bugtracking on Sourceforge, and say 'hi' on freenode at #drupy.

A little birdie let me know that there are a group of folks that are going to take a run at using the Drupal project as a template to re-work the same system in Python.

Do you have thoughts on what you would do differently in Python? Are there specific language features that would do interesting things? Any ideas on Drupal in Python (DIP?), please leave a reference in the comments.

In kicking around this idea the other day, I was thinking about if there is a way to bridge to PHP from Python. That is, could you clone the Drupal APIs and then run a PHP-based (native) Drupal module in a Python framework?

Note: the group is actually private, and doesn't want any publicity at this point. I'm hoping to use this blog post to draw some attention to different concepts, without flooding them with people.

Update: this is a beginner project, so think of this more as exploratory coding than a hard core undertaking. *However* -- I think this will kick off some interesting discussion: I encourage people to do some research and tag stuff with "Drupal in Python" to keep the discussion going.

I can't believe it's been almost 4 years since I last bumped into Mark Pratt (entry from November 2003 about OpenSourceXperts). A chance IM conversation today let me know that he is now based out of Barcelona, but my trip to attend DrupalCon Barcelona means that I'm just going to miss him while he makes a trip to the US.

Mark is a Zope expert, open source business model experimenter, and more. He told me he's now got a great consulting firm, Vanguardistas, that are doing "amazing things with Zope3". I admit to knowing very little about the cool stuff going on in Zope3, so it will be interesting to hear more. And of course, we're all partners in waving the flag of open source goodness, especially in Europe.

I'll be missing Mark in Barcelona, but he's connected me to some of his colleagues at Vanguardistas, and told me that La Bombeta is where I'll have to go for delicious, cheap food. I'm really looking forward to this trip...I really have to make plans to be in Europe more regularly: there are so many great people and projects to get connected to, never mind the side benefits like great food :P

Do you speak snake? A Jabber server written on the Python Twisted framework.

This is a new project of mine/Bryght's. I've long been an advocate for the Jabber/XMPP protocol. Now, I'm hoping to give something back plus form a community around a new jabber server daemon. For now, just redirects to a wiki where we'll organize and add some more details. Feel free to add "like to have" or other ideas of what you want to see out of a new Python-based jabberd.
